It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post:harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions.Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.The ARC:Grain Crops Institute (ARC:GCI) seeks to appoint experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions in Potchefstroom (North West) and Cedara (KwaZulu:Natal):Junior ResearcherKey performance areas:Characterise, rejuvenate and maintain maize, sorghum, sunflower and pearl millet accessions in the germplasm bank and keep a fully updated electronic databaseAcquire and utilise maize, sorghum, sunflower and pearl millet germplasm for research with local and international partnersPhenotype sunflower accessions for oil content and in:field agro:processingEvaluate sorghum accessions for starch content and extractability for bio:ethanolContribute to germplasm conservation in bambara groundnut, dry bean, cowpea, groundnut and soybeanSource new research opportunities and write proposalsPrepare and manage the project budgetCompile monthly, quarterly, annual and ad hoc reportsProvide leadership and mentoring to Research Technicians and Assistants.Requirements:An MSc degree in Plant Breeding or related postgraduate degree in Science3:5 years experience in plant breeding or germplasm conservation will be an added advantageGood communication skills (written and verbal)Computer literacy, with proficiency in the MS Office suiteA valid Code B drivers licenceThe ability to work long hours in the field, greenhouse and laboratory.The closing date for applications is 22 November 2013.Applications: Ms Elsabe Steyn, ARC:Grain Crops Institute, Private Bag X1251, Potchefstroom 2520 or faxed to (018) Applications can also be submitted by e:mail to: remuneration packages will be congruent with the scope, responsibilities and stature of the positions.Appointment will be subject to a 6:month probation period (permanent posts only) and a positive security clearance.Applications, accompanied by a covering letter, detailed CV (including certificates, supporting documents, copy of drivers licence and nationality : NB: Non:RSA citizens/work permit holders must attach certified copies), as well as the names and particulars of 3 traceable referees, should be forwarded to the contact mentioned at each division.A SAQA evaluation report must accompany foreign qualifications.
